We have a huge collection of traditional Staunton chess pieces made from wood and metal.
The term Staunton refers to the style of the pieces. Nathaniel Cook designed the first Staunton chess set in the mid 1800s, and Howard Staunton, an English chess master, endorsed the chess set design, hence the name Staunton chess set. This design has come to be the standard around the world ever since. A chess set is classified as Staunton if the King has a crown, the Queen has a coronet, the Bishop has a miter, the Knight looks like a stallion’s head, the Rook looks like a castle tower, and the Pawn has a round head and a collar. |
